Other gestures

When we refer to other technical gestures, we are referring to those gestures that are not usually trained in a specific way. A goalkeeper who arrives from a changeover on the run and jumps as best he can to save the ball, that gesture from the ground after a save, etc. We can also add to this bag the actions of saving in the face of a lob or a spinning shot.

Although they are not specifically trained, they should be encouraged. Situations that favour rebounds, goalkeepers arriving late, lobs, etc. should be included in training sessions.

To stop a lob we have several options:

      • Jump forward if we are higher than the ball (goalkeeper clearly higher than the thrower or throws from below).
      • Jump upwards in case the lob is badly thrown and we reach the ball with a little momentum.
      • Moving backwards (with or without jumping).

In the case of spinning, we must avoid going backwards in the gesture we perform. Depending on where the action is performed, a block stop or a slippering save can be used to stop the ball.

The most important thing is to anticipate the shot (watch the grab of the ball).
