Exercises

In this section we will talk about technical, tactical and physical work (including stretching and joint mobility).

The objective of the technical exercises that we do outside of the court, preferably with a goalkeeping coach, is to improve the technical skills of the goalkeepers. We should include a tactical component (usually to observe arm position) if we have someone who wants to throw. If we don’t, we can execute the drills with elements of stepping, touching, catching, etc.

As coaches, we must ensure the correct execution of the technique and that it is performed as quickly as possible. It is complicated for all goalkeepers to perform the technical gestures in the same way, due to their anthropometric conditions, but we must try to ensure that all goalkeepers follow common patterns. For example, the goalkeeper must rotate the hip to raise the leg. When technical gestures seem to be something we are looking for, we must include the speed of execution. Depending on the goalkeeper’s stage of development, we should focus on correct technique (younger goalkeepers) or speed (when they have mastered the concepts and the priority is to stop the ball).

A good warm-up, including joint mobility and stretching exercises, is always necessary before executing the technical gestures, especially in the more advanced ones.
