Placement and orientation

The goalkeeper should be placed between the shoulder of the player with the ball (or the ball for younger players) and the centre of the goal, at the appropriate distance from the goal line. With close range throws, we should move two steps forward (except in group 1, under 12 years old) to cover more of the goal with the body. With wing throws, we should walk one step and with 9-metre throws, we stay back. While moving in the area, following the ball, we should be (more or less) 0.5-1 metres away from the goal line.

Orientation is a technical concept linked to placement. The whole body must be “pointing” towards the ball. Nose, hips and shoulders. The feet should not “point” towards the ball, because this is an unnatural position. A comfortable position of the feet is sufficient, with the ball (or the thrower’s shoulder) on the imaginary line formed by the angle of our feet.
